产生于清代的中国古代家庭小说的一部重要作品。小说从始至末，一直笼罩着一种人生始梦的幻灭感。作者全力塑造出一个完美女性的悲剧形象，通过这样一个完美女性的毁灭，揭示出封建社会女性的悲惨的生存状况和不可避免的悲剧。《林兰香》具有一种朴素生动而又泼辣峭利的文字风格，尤其为人称道的是人物的语言，具有鲜明的性格色彩，真是一人一风格，一人一性情，确属难能可贵。小说从始至末，一直笼罩着一种人生始梦的幻灭感。开卷写道：“天地逆旅，光阴过客，后之视今，今之视昔，不过梨园，一弹词，一梦幻而已”。作者对历史，对人生的之种虚无幻灭的慨叹，与《红楼梦》中“好一似食尽鸟投林”落了片白茫茫大地真干净，何其相似。
共十二回，题“苏庵主人编次”、“白香山居士校正”，作者的真实身份与姓名已不可考。产生的年代大约在明代后期。小说写的是明朝山东泰安州乡民白双山夫妻，因为天旱，颗粒无收，被双双饿死，留下了个十二岁的女儿。一天，一位僧人经过泰安州，见白双山女儿孤苦伶仃，无依无靠，遂起恻隐之心，将其带到泰山，交给一位叫真如法师的僧人收养，真如法师为其取名莲岸，莲岸自此就在真如法师的教导下修行学佛。六年之后，莲岸十八岁时，她告别真如法师，下山访道，自创门户。在路上，她遇到了一位白猿大仙，大仙送给她一卷天书，叫《白莲经》。莲岸如获至宝，刻苦揣摩，从而学会了神通法术。后来，官逼民反，她聚众起事，与官府作对，带领造反者占领了柳林寨，创立教门，成为白莲教的开山祖师白莲大师。
光绪廿九（1903）年上海大同书局出版，十四回。作者为孙希孟，署“藤谷古香”，伪托日文小说译出。本书写近代史上奇人沈北山事。光绪二十五（1899）年，常熟名士沈北山冒死上疏请西太后交出政权，杀荣禄、刚毅、李莲英三凶，一时轰动全国。小说中荀北山欲上万言书，请归政于皇上，诛三凶以谢天下，携奏折请大学士徐桐代奏，被徐桐逐出。亲朋故旧唯恐祸发株连，酿成大狱，派人将他押送还乡。途经天津，北山将折稿投送《国闻报》发表，引起一场轩然大波，被捕下狱。末回荀北山获释，与友人行酒令点将，历数当时维新党与革命党的风云人物，首点孙文，次点章炳麟，评云：“革命何尝不是堂堂正正的旗，但民智不开，民力不足，民德不修，这三样没有，决不能革命。”最终以“轰天雷”比拟荀北山作结。
