A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost-Story of Christmas, commonly known as A Christmas Carol, is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843; the first edition was illustrated by John Leech. A Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an old miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. After their visits Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.

一部带有自传性质的作品,晚清四大谴责小说之一。全书以主人公“九死一生”的经历为干线,从他奔父丧开始,至其经商失败终止,通过这个人物20年间的遭遇和见闻,广泛地揭露了从光绪十年(1884)中法战争前后至光绪三十一年(1905)左右的清末社会的黑暗现实,并从侧面描绘出帝国主义的疯狂侵略。作品写了200来件“怪现状”,勾画出一个到处充斥着“蛇鼠”、“豺虎”、“魑魅”的鬼蜮世界。在清末小说中,它反映的生活面较广,除官场之外,还包括商场、洋场,兼及医卜星相、三教九流,揭露当时的政治状况、社会风尚、道德面貌和世态人情。所以发表时标为“社会小说”。

晚清四大谴责小说之一。清朝曾朴著,初版署名为“爱自由者发起,东亚病夫编述”。作者以状元郎金雯青(影射洪钧)与名妓傅彩云(影射赵彩云)的婚姻生活故事为情节主线,将30年间重要历史事件的侧影及其相关的趣闻佚事,加以剪裁提炼,熔铸成篇。《孽海花》所表现的30年历史内容,亦即同治中期至光绪后期这一特定历史阶段政治和文化的变迁史。《负暄絮语》说:“近来新撰小说,风起云涌,无虑千百种,固自不乏佳构。而才情纵逸,寓意深远者,以《孽海花》为巨擘。”鲁迅《中国小说史略》称其“结构工巧,文采斐然”。
