They look so dull and dowdy in the spring weather, when the snow drops and the crocuses are putting on their dainty frocks of white and mauve and yellow, and the baby-buds from every branch are peeping with bright eyes out on the world, and stretching forth soft little leaves toward the coming gladness of their lives. They stand apart, so cold and hard amid the stirring hope and joy that are throbbing all around them.

写游记象是件不太费力的事情,因为任何一个小学生,总有机会在作文本子上留下点成绩。至于一个作家呢,只要他肯旅行,就自然有许多可写的事事物物搁在眼前。情形尽管是这样,好游记可不怎么多。编选高级语文教本的人,将更容易深一层体会到,古今游记虽浩如烟海,入选时实费斟酌。
近十余年来,报纸上的特写栏,已成为读者注意中心。有些报道文章,比社论或新闻还重要,比副刊杂志上文章,也更能吸引读者,不仅给人印象真实而生动,还将发生直接广泛教育效果。这种引人入胜的作用,即或只出于一种来源不远的风气习惯,可是我们却不能不承认,在已成风气习惯后这类作品的真实价值,必然得重估!他的作用在目前已极大,还会影响到报纸的将来,更会影响到现代文学中散文和小说形式及内容。
我们时常都可听到人说,“俺,没有事情作,看小说。”“放了假怎样消遣?看小说吧。”事实上坐柜台生意不忙的店员,办公室无事可作的公务员,甚至于厂长,委员,不走运的牙医,脾气大的女护士,尽管生活不同,身分不同,可是他们将不约而同,用小说来耗费多余生命,且从小说所表现的人事哀乐中取得快乐和教育。试从家中五十岁左右认识字的老妈妈,和十岁以上的小学生,注意注意他们对于小说故事的发迷,也可证明我说的“从小说取得快乐和教育”,是件如何普遍而平常的事情。
好朋友:这几年我因为个人工作与事务上的责任,常有机会接到你们的来信。我们不拘相去如何远,人如何生疏,好象都能够在极短时期中成为异常亲密的好朋友。即可以听取你们生活各方面的意见。昔人说,“人与人心原是可以沟通的”,我相信在某种程度内,我们相互之间,在这种通信上真已得到毫无隔阂的友谊了。对于这件事我觉得快乐。
几年来文学词典上有个名词极不走运,就是“技巧”。多数人说到技巧时,就有一种鄙视意识。另外有一部分人却极害羞,在人面前深怕提这两个字。“技巧”两个字似乎包含了纤细、琐碎、空洞等等意味,有时甚至于带点猥亵下流意味。对于小玩具小摆设,我们褒奖赞颂中,离不了“技巧”一词,批评一篇文章,加上“技巧得很”时,就隐寓似褒实贬。
这篇东西本是写给外国人看的,所以非常粗浅,但是我想,有时候也应当像初级教科书一样地头脑简单一下,把事情弄明白些。表面上中国人是没有宗教可言的。中国智识阶级这许多年来一直是无神论者。佛教对于中国哲学的影响又是一个问题,可是佛教在普遍人的教育上似乎留下很少的痕迹。就因为对一切都怀疑,中国文学里弥漫着大的悲哀。
